Every mom should switch on a bit of reality tv with the kids if ONLY to have the chance to say: “See how damn lucky you are to live with me and not her?!? Your life’s a day at the park, sister.”

My guilty pleasure is Flipping Out…it just can’t be real, can it? Last week Jeff Lewis said, “I”m not a religious person but I do pray for the opportunity to make fun of people. Today my prayers were answered.”

so nice not be alone in the reality tv world. I agree Julie, watching these shows does make you feel better about yourself in a super sad and twisted way. I can remember watching Wife Swap (which Bryan banned from the house for bringing in bad karma) and saying to the kids “See, it could be worse you could be living with the goth mom who has a stripper pole in her living room and makes her kids eat raw meat!”

My latest trailer-trash t.v. is Hoarders. That show makes me feel like Martha Stewart! I want to scream at the people on the show, “Throw that gross sh*t out!”…..especially the people who hoard food….ewww!! I swear, if I had it in me, I’d go back to school and take a class on “The Psychology of Hoarding”……it’s fascinating (in a very sick, voyeuristic sort of way).

I also watched — again, with a sick fascination — Toddler and Tiaras for a couple of episodes, until it started to make me feel a little depressed. Those spray-tanned, fake-toothed, taffeta-clad toddlers and their mothers …… didn’t these people see “Little Miss Sunshine??!!” Ee-gads…….it’s a sick commentary on our society. Is that beauty pagent thing a southern phenomenom, or are toddlers all over the U.S. entering those contests too? Yikes……

Do you suppose that we watch reality tv to feel a little better about ourselves and the decisions we are making about our own lives? “I may not keep a super clean house, but at least my house won’t ever look like THAT!” “I may not nominated Mom-of-the-Year, but at least my 2-year-old doesn’t prance around on stage in a bikini and a fake tan!”

You know, from your descriptions I feel like I could even like them. Maybe if I had Tivo and a way to fast forward but then again……. I think they will remain something that I enjoy through your eyes. My addictions are no better – Dexter, Californication and In Treatment just about sent me into therapy. Perhaps NYC is like a giant reality show and having it all day just leaves me at full capacity!

My husband is disgusted with my fascination over the Atlanta housewives. I’m with you, tho..loved the NJ ones the BEST. It’s Toddlers and Tiaras that has my whole house abhorred; has put Emma off the notion of spray tans forever. Doug keeps deleting it. But I have to watch it. I love it most when they put those fake teeth in those little mouths. And, the moms are riveting as they bejewel along. I keep forgetting to tivo “Intervention”…but I hear it’s actually worthwhile. So, make room on the couch, Felice. And please pass the remote!
